Horror - Colin Firth - Vampire?

It would appear Colin Firth is to don the fangs to star alongside Nicole Kidman, in Stoker currently in production.
It concerns a young girl, who has recently lost her father, whose mysterious and sinister uncle turns up at the house.  The screenplay was on 2010's Black List of best unproduced scripts.

For some reason, I really want to hate this - Firth and Kidmann, it could be a proper luvvie fest - but it's directed by Oldboy's Chan Wook Park who made the excellent vampire flick Thirst, so it could be very good indeed.

  1. Sounds like its a role he can really GET HIS TEETH INTO. ...Prr-Tsshhh!!!!!!!

(Yes I really did make that poor joke!)

  2. This sounds cool! Firth and Kidman could bring a real touch of class to what already sounds like a cracking premise...

  3. I've heard about this some time ago. I'm curious to see it. I like both Firth and Kidman. Personally, I'd like to see Firth play Dracula. Maybe this one step removed? Either way, when you have oscar winners in your horror flick it adds bankability and creedence to a genre that Hollywood often underestimates.

  4. I agree. Horror as a genre is not really taken seriously enough as a profitable product.
Del Toro's At The Mountains of Madness has been put on indefinite hold, despite having heavyweight Tom Cruise's name attatched, because studios are unwilling to take risks bankrolling a 'genre' picture. And I can sort of understand their viewpoint - what makes more money at the box-office, Pans Labyrinth or Alvin and the Chipmunks?
Ridley Scott was unable to get the $150M he wanted for the Alien prequel because Fox weren't prepared to spend that sort of money on an R film with a limted audience.
As you say, having a couple of Oscar winners in your flick, certainly adds credibility to your horror film, and hopefully to the genre as a whole.

  5. I can actually see this working; Firth sounds like a good change-up casting choice.
